Excire Foto: Pre-purchase questions about hardware, licenses, updates and supported image formats

Wir unterstützen die folgenden Bildformate: .3fr, .arw, .cr2, .cr3, .crw, .dcr, .dng, .erf, .heic, .heif, .iiq, .kdc, .mef, .mos, .mrw, .nef, .nrw, .orf, .pef, .ppm, .raf, .raw, .rw2, .rwl, .sr2, .srf, .srw, .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .png, .pgm, .tif, .tiff, .psd

Please note that some compressed variants of these formats are available from us or are not supported by us or the libraries we use. Therefore we recommend to test Excire Foto with your own photos before buying.

We recommend Windows users to install the Microsoft Raw image extension: Download

Files with the extension .heic or .heif are supported since version 1.1.1.

Under macOs there is nothing else to do. Here the HEIC format is processed automatically.

Under Windows the HEIC format is not natively supported. In order to display .heic files, the system must support HEVC compression. To do this, you can install, for example, the both following extensions from the Microsoft Store, which are offered by Microsoft Corporation: both install the following extensions from the Microsoft Store offered by Microsoft Corporation:

HEIF image extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions (fee required)

After installation, images in HEIC format can be displayed and used by Excire Foto. If the images were already added to Excire Foto before the extensions were installed, the images can be removed via the context menu and added again via synchronization.

Excire Foto’s license is valid for a maximum of 3 computers (PC or Mac) in one household. In your purchase confirmation, you will always find download links for both versions in addition to your license key.

In rare cases, a new version of Excire Foto cannot be installed on a Windows computer on which a previous version is already installed, because the installation routine cannot appropriately remove the previous version. In this case, the installation will report “Error: 1 Failed to remove files from the previous installation.”

To solve the problem, do the following:

  1. Perform a backup of your database: How can I create a backup of the database and import it?
  2. Uninstall the previous version of Excire Foto: How do I uninstall Excire Photo?
  3. Install the new version of Excire Foto
  4. Restore the backup of your database (see above)

If you want to uninstall Excire Foto to reinstall the same or a newer version later, you should back up your database before uninstalling Here how to do that.

To uninstall Excire Foto from your computer, follow these steps:

Mac

Re-open the installation disk image of Excire Foto and double-click “Uninstall.”
The latest installation disk image can be found here.!

Windows

Open the Windows Control Panel and select “Programs” and then “Programs and Features.” In the list of installed programs, look for “Excire Foto” and select “Uninstall.”

Excire Foto: Questions about databases and previews

Using the database from multiple computers at the same time is not possible. Using one after the other works as long as only Windows or only Mac OSX is used.

However, some functionalities are only available as long as the paths to the photos are the same on all systems. Storing the database, including the previews on a network drive, may impact performance though. However, one license may be used on up to three computers.

To create a backup of your database, go to “Help” → “Manual Backup” in the „Excire Foto menu...„

Alternatively, you can perform the backup manually by copying the database files and associated folders. You can find the necessary information here..

To restore a backup, copy the folder containing the backup to any location as needed, and then go to “File” → “Open Database Folder,” → “Select Database Folder” in Excire Foto’s menu..

Alternatively, you can manually import the backup by copying the database files and associated folders to the location of your currently used database. Again, you can find the necessary information here..

Moving previews separately to another directory or disk is currently not directly supported by Excire Foto. However, there are operating system features that advanced users can take advantage of to accomplish this.

Mac

  1. Close Excire Foto
  2. Move the folder previews.exfoto from your Excire Foto database directory to the desired location (the default database is located at “/Users//Library/Application Support/excire-foto”)
  3. Create a symbolic link (symlink) to the place where the preview directory was before (command: ln -s).
  4. Detailed instructions on how to create symbolic links can be found here..
  5. Starten Sie Excire Foto

Windows

  1. Close Excire Foto
  2. Move the folder previews.exfoto from your Excire Foto database directory to the desired location (the default database is located at “%APPDATA%\Excire Foto”)
  3. Create a symbolic link (symlink) to the place where the preview directory was before (command: mklink /d).
  4. ctory was before (command: mklink /d). Detailed instructions on how to create symbolic links can be found here..
  5. Starten Sie Excire Foto

The same procedure also works with the folders 1to1.exfoto (for 1:1 previews) and thumbnails.exfoto (for thumbnails)

No, currently no data can be exchanged between Excire Foto and Excire Search.

There are two possible causes for this:

1. A faulty installation. Re-running the installer with the necessary user rights should fix this problem.

2. An antivirus program (e.g. Windows Defender) prevents access to the Excire Foto database. To resolve this, you need to add an exception for Excire Foto to the antivirus program in question.

Excire Foto: Questions about metadata and export

When adding photos, their metadata are loaded. For the keywords already stored in the photo to be loaded, the option “Load keywords from analyzed photos” must be enabled. You can find the option in “File” → “Settings” in the “Metadata” tab..

Although all metadata is loaded while adding photos, the keywords stored in the images are not loaded to Excire Foto until the images are analyzed downstream. Therefore, if the “Analyze photos” option is disabled while adding, then the keywords will not be loaded.

The analysis can be done later by right-clicking on a folder and selecting “Analyze” but the keywords can only be transferred to Excire Foto if the analysis is performed directly when adding the photos.

For photos that have already been added and analyzed, the loading of metadata (including keywords) can also be triggered afterwards by executing “Photo” → “Load metadata”. .

When saving metadata via “Photo” → “Save Metadata”, in the case of so-called “metadata arrays”,which include keywords, metadata already saved in the photo will remain there.

The keywords assigned in Excire Foto are appended to the already existing ones. To ensure that after “Save Metadata” exactly those keywords are stored in the photo that were assigned in Excire Foto, the “Append contents of a metadata array" option must be deactivated.

Thus, the keywords in the photo will be replaced by the keywords assigned in Excire Foto. You can find the option in “File” → “Settings” in the “Metadata” tab.

This can be done using the “Load Metadata” and “Save Metadata”Please also note that the “Load keywords from analyzed photos” option (Metadata tab) must be set in the preferences.

Export can be triggered for one or more selected photos from the “Photo” menu. In the trial version, this functionality is disabled.

When exporting, you can select whether a new JPG or PNG file should be created for each of the selected photos at a selected location, or whether the original files should be copied to this location.

Along with the exported files, metadata can be saved if required. This includes metadata read by Excire Foto as well as assigned keywords.

Depending on the destination file type and the “Always use sidecar files” option in the settings in the “Metadata” tab, XMP sidecar files may be created.

Unfortunately, with proprietary RAW formats, we are unable to write metadata to the file due to a lack of standardization. This is handled similarly by other apps, such as Adobe Lightroom.

With DNGs and JPEGs, things are a little different. There we try to write the metadata to the file unless the option “Always use sidecar files” is enabled. It can happen that writing metadata to a DNG file doesn’t work for various reasons. In this case, a sidecar file is placed next to the DNG file.

In the settings (File → Settings), you will find a tab “Metadata” where you can set which metadata can be used for filtering.

Unfortunately, this is not possible, because Apple keeps your photos in proprietary management. In Excire Fotos, you can only add photos that are located in folders in the file system. So you have to export your photos from Apple Photos or transfer your photos from an iPhone to your computer using the “Digital Pictures” app.

Questions about functionality and in case of error

Go to the “Help” menu and click on “Send error report”, and fill out the form. We will then immediately receive an error report with your log files and can quickly determine where the cause of the problem is and work out a solution.

If you do not have access to the menu, you can find the log files under:

Mac“/Users//Library/Application Support/excire-foto”

Windows“%APPDATA%\Excire Foto”

These are all files with the extension “.log”. Send them to support@excire.com with a brief description of the error.

The cause of this problem is that the operating system does not recognize the corresponding program as a program for opening images.
You can fix this by opening the image once with this program via the operating system (Explorer under Windows, Finder under Mac OS X) using the “Open with” function.
After that, the software should also show up in the context menu of Excire Foto. This must be done separately for each image format (jpg, raw, cr2, etc.).

Here is a detailed description of how to do this on Mac OSX.

No. Data protection is important to us, therefore our AI analyses your photos on your computer. We do not use a cloud solution.

Unfortunately this is not possible. But this is not due to Excire Foto, but much more to the methods that are currently used for image analysis. These methods were developed with several million photos trained on special hardware.

All this happens in one complex Offline process, which takes several days. Only in this way can the maximum detection performance, whereby we would like to point out that our solution is a compromise between best detection performance and minimum runtime is because Excire does not run in a cloud, but on customer computers.

Unfortunately, such procedures cannot be trained with just a few examples, or if this happens the detection performance is (often) unacceptable.

Please install the Raw image extension from Microsoft

Then perform the following steps:

  1. Restart Excire Foto
  2. Remove the relevant photos from your Excire Foto database
  3. Add the photos again by synchronizing the folder that contains the images
  4. As an alternative to steps 2 and 3, remove the entire folder from Excire Foto and add it again.

Excire Foto 2022 - Trial version

Note for existing Excire Foto customers: Excire Foto users have to keep in mind for testing that the previous Excire database will be modified when the program is started for the first time. Thus a switch back to version 1.3 is not possible without a backup. We therefore recommend creating a backup before using Excire Foto 2022. How to do this is described in the following forum posts: LINK 1 and LINK 2
