Excire’s image-recognition technology has been successfully integrated with X-Ways Forensics, a state-of-the-art program used by digital forensics experts to investigate crime, analyze suspicious activity, and support security operations around the world.
For over a year now, the X-Ways Forensics software has included an Excire Forensics module, which relies on Excire’s cutting-edge computer vision capabilities to inspect images for a wide array of content: various weapons, drugs, nudity, animals, food, structures, and much more. (X-Ways provides a full list of detected objects on the company website.)
Additionally, the Excire Forensics module uses Excire’s class-leading face-recognition technology to identify specific faces as well as more general facial properties (e.g., beard/no beard, glasses/no glasses/sunglasses, and hair color). Especially useful for forensic professionals is the level of customizability supported by Excire’s technology. Users can filter each new analysis based on a slew of selectable criteria. As X-Ways explains:
“Pictures can be automatically categorized as irrelevant or notable. In the extensive hierarchy of identifiable objects you can select individual objects or entire subtrees that render a picture irrelevant from your point of view with a high degree of certainty, such as any kinds of animals, plants, sports, musical instruments etc. You can also define what renders a picture notable for you, such as nudity („act“), children, vehicles, text etc…Logical AND combinations are supported when categorizing photos as notable.”
The Excire module even includes “predefined [AND combinations] that are meant to assist in child pornography investigations.” And users have the option to instruct the program to look for “similar” content by providing a set of reference images.
Even more importantly, Excire’s technology runs locally, allowing for complete privacy and data security. Images analyzed by forensic professionals will not be uploaded to the cloud but will instead remain on the investigator’s own computer.
Excire’s proprietary artificial intelligence models have long been used to power the popular Excire Foto and Excire Search image-organization software, and that won’t change; the company is still dedicated to providing photographers with the best AI tools for searching, categorizing, and culling images. However, Excire is now also branching out into new areas – and the integration with X-Ways Forensics is only the start!
For software teams looking to add cutting-edge AI image recognition to their programs (including, but not limited to, digital forensics applications), Excire offers a computer vision API that provides easy access to all of the advanced technology explored above, including object recognition, facial recognition, and similarity analyses.
