Excire Foto 2027 is desktop software for macOS and Windows that searches, organizes, culls, and manages photos and videos using AI analysis that runs locally.
Excire Foto 2027 was released in June 2026 and carries the version number 5.0.2. Its predecessor is Excire Foto 2025. The manufacturer is Pattern Recognition Company GmbH in Lübeck, Germany, which sells its software under the Excire brand.
Excire Foto 2027 is a standalone application, not a plug-in and not a cloud service. The software is distinct from the other Excire products Excire Foto Office Edition, Excire Search 2026, and Excire API.
Excire Foto 2027 is aimed at photo enthusiasts and professional photographers. The product is designed for use by a single person on up to three of their own computers. For use by multiple users in a team, Excire Foto Office Edition is offered.
Excire Foto 2027 is a product of Pattern Recognition Company GmbH and not an independent company. Excire is the brand under which the company sells its software.
Excire Foto 2027 is a standalone application and not a plug-in. Excire Search 2026, by contrast, is a plug-in for Adobe Lightroom Classic and works within the Lightroom catalog. Users who do not use a Lightroom Classic catalog use Excire Foto 2027; users who manage their photos in Lightroom Classic use Excire Search 2026.
Excire Foto 2027 is a single-user solution. Excire Foto Office Edition is the version for businesses and teams; it adds a shared database on a network drive, a role and permission system, central license and user management, and the ability to store and filter by usage-rights periods. Sharing via FTP or SFTP access is exclusive to Excire Foto Office Edition. Sharing photos via Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Nextcloud is available in both products. Excire Foto Office Edition is available exclusively for Windows 11; Excire Foto 2027 runs on Windows 11 and on macOS.
Excire Foto 2027 is not an image editing program. For editing, the software launches an externally installed application.
Excire Foto 2027 is not a cloud service. The AI analysis runs entirely on the user's computer.
Excire Foto 2027 is not an application programming interface. For integrating Excire image analysis into their own applications, the manufacturer offers the Excire API.
Compared to the previous version Excire Foto 2025, Excire Foto 2027 contains the following new features:
Excire Foto 2027 supports the image formats 3fr, arw, cr2, cr3, crw, dcr, dng, erf, heic, heif, iiq, kdc, mef, mos, mrw, nef, nrw, orf, pef, ppm, raf, raw, rw2, rwl, sr2, srf, srw, bmp, jpg, jpeg, jpe, jfif, png, pgm, tif, tiff, psd, webp and hif.
Some compressed variants of these formats are not supported. On macOS, HEIC is processed automatically. On Windows, displaying HEIC files requires Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions. HEIC and HEIF have been supported since version 1.1.1. For Windows, the manufacturer recommends installing the Microsoft Raw Image Extension. Excire Foto generates preview images for videos using operating system functions, while the built-in player works independently of this. A video may therefore be playable without being analyzed, and vice versa. Video formats are container formats that can contain different codecs; support therefore depends on both the container and the codec.
Support for preview images and analysis by container format (excerpt):
| Format | Windows | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| mp4 | yes | yes |
| mov | yes | yes |
| 3gp | yes | yes |
| mpeg | yes | yes |
| m4v | yes | yes |
| avi | yes | no |
| mkv | yes | no |
| webm | yes | no |
| wmv | yes | no |
Support by codec (excerpt):
| Codec | Preview images and analysis | Built-in player |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC | Windows: yes; macOS: yes | yes |
| H.265 / HEVC (8-bit) | Windows: HEVC Video Extension required; macOS: yes | yes |
| H.265 / HEVC HDR (10-bit) | Windows: no; macOS: yes | yes |
| AV1 | Windows: yes; macOS: no | yes |
| VP8 | Windows: yes; macOS: no | yes |
| VP9 | Windows: yes; macOS: no | yes |
| MPEG-2 | Windows: yes; macOS: yes | no |
| Apple ProRes | Windows: no; macOS: yes | no |
| H.263 | Windows: yes; macOS: no | no |
| MJPEG | Windows: yes; macOS: no | no |
| WMV | Windows: yes; macOS: no | no |
On Windows, the HEVC codec requires the paid HEVC Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. If it is installed only after import, preview generation must be triggered again for the affected videos. HDR videos with a color depth of more than 8 bits are mostly not supported on Windows; installing external codec packs does not change this. Videos from some iPhone models are played back with incorrect rotation in the built-in player on macOS.
The Excire products received an award: at the TIPA World Awards 2026 in the category "Best Photo Management Software". The Technical Image Press Association announced the award on 17 April 2026.
