It&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/en\/best-photo-organizing-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very nice photo organizer<\/a>, and it&#8217;s used by millions of photographers, from beginners all the way to professionals. But finding specific files in Lightroom, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as your image library grows, can be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really, really hard<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, if you\u2019re struggling to search your Lightroom Classic catalog for particular images (or particular sets of images), all is not lost. Adobe has incorporated a few basic search features, which allow you to sort and filter images based on various characteristics (keywords, filenames, metadata, etc).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you want more powerful Lightroom search tools, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/en\/best-lightroom-plugins-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI-powered plugins<\/a> that integrate nicely with LrC\u2019s existing interface, and which can make finding (and organizing) your photos a whole lot easier.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, I walk you through the different search features available to you in Lightroom Classic. Then I offer a quick overview of a Lightroom plugin, <a href=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/en\/excire-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Excire Search<\/a>, which is now my go-to tool for finding photos in my catalog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive right in!<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Searching for Photos in Lightroom Classic: The Basics<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I said above, Lightroom offers a few features for finding photos within your catalog. in other words, the Sort Bar is fine for ordering images but bad at helping you retrieve particular shots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightroom Classic offers another tool, however, which does a better job in that regard:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Filter Bar<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t spent much time playing around in the Lightroom Classic Library Module, you may be unfamiliar with the Filter Bar. But it offers a decent way to search for photos in your catalog, since you can use it to filter the images in your current view by text, metadata, and other criteria. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(What&#8217;s especially useful is that you can\u00a0<em>layer\u00a0<\/em>multiple filters on top of one another; this means that you can narrow down your search based on metadata, then apply a text search on top of the metadata filter, then filter the resulting images based on certain attributes, for example.)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find the Filter Bar in a couple of different places. However, in order to effectively find images using text queries, the images must be labeled (e.g., you must have added descriptive keywords prior to using the Text filter).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even after <a href=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/en\/photo-tagging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you\u2019ve carefully tagged each and every file<\/a> in your Lightroom catalog, you must always remember which labels have been applied to which images.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if you\u2019ve applied the keywords \u201csilhouette,\u201d \u201cgolden hour,\u201d and \u201cbeach\u201d to a seaside landscape shot, you\u2019ll be able to retrieve the image by typing \u201cbeach,\u201d but your searches for \u201cwater,\u201d \u201cocean,\u201d \u201clandscape,\u201d and \u201cseascape\u201d will come up empty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a problem faced by many photographers. But as I explain later on in this article, there is a neat little solution you can use to bypass this difficulty!<\/span><\/p><h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Attribute<\/span><\/h4><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60606 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-9.webp\" alt=\"Lightroom Classic Filter Bar Attribute search option\" width=\"1500\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-9.webp 1500w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-9-300x137.webp 300w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-9-1024x467.webp 1024w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-9-768x350.webp 768w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-9-18x8.webp 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Attribute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filter is fairly intuitive; it lets you isolate images based on:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flags (e.g., Picks, Rejects)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star ratings<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Color labels<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edit status<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Export status\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">File kind (i.e., original photos, virtual copies, or videos)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s handy for narrowing down a set of images to your best or most recently edited work. I sometimes use it when <a href=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/en\/photography-culling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culling my photos<\/a> in Lightroom and want to quickly see my best (i.e., 4-star or 5-star) shots\u2014though I do sometimes prefer to create Smart Collections for this. Metadata<\/span><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Metadata<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filter gives you a grid-based view where you can filter by various metadata stored in your image files, such as camera model, lens, date, focal length, exposure settings, and more:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60608 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-11.webp\" alt=\"Lightroom Classic metadata Filter Bar option\" width=\"1500\" height=\"841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-11.webp 1500w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-11-300x168.webp 300w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-11-1024x574.webp 1024w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-11-768x431.webp 768w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-11-18x10.webp 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each metadata filter appears as a column, and you can stack multiple columns side by side to build complex, highly specific queries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have images from multiple shoots or clients stored in a single folder, the Metadata filter can instantly separate them by date, camera, or any other accessible property. However, its effectiveness depends entirely on the completeness of the metadata. If your images were stripped of EXIF data during export or import, or if your workflow involved scans or legacy files without metadata, the panel may return no results at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I often sift through large batches of photos from multi-day trips using the Date option in the Metadata filter; it\u2019s a straightforward way for me to separate out images taken on different days but imported in the same batch. But I have run into the occasional issue when using the Date filter on files taken with rented cameras\u2014I often forget to set the date correctly, and as a result, I\u2019ll be stuck sorting through images that were supposedly taken in 1904.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, I do think the Metadata filter is a reliable way to slice through a large Lightroom Classic catalog. But again, it depends on whether the relevant data exists in your files.<\/span><\/p><h2>Facial Recognition in Lightroom Classic<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photographers sometimes ask me about native <a href=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/en\/best-photo-organizers-with-facial-recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facial recognition tools<\/a> in Lightroom Classic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt technically already exists,\u201d I tell them. \u201cBut it\u2019s a lot less capable than you\u2019d expect.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, Lightroom Classic also includes a <\/span><b>People<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature, which is powered by facial recognition and lets you apply tags to the faces in your images.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can access it by clicking the People view at the bottom of your screen:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60609 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-12.webp\" alt=\"Lightroom Classic People view button\" width=\"1500\" height=\"925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-12.webp 1500w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-12-300x185.webp 300w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-12-1024x631.webp 1024w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-12-768x474.webp 768w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-12-18x12.webp 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea here is that you can click on a set of images and head into the People view. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then you can have Lightroom scan the files and group together similar faces, which you can then name:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60610 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-13.webp\" alt=\"Lightroom Classic facial recognition feature screenshot with suggested names\" width=\"948\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-13.webp 948w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-13-300x270.webp 300w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-13-768x691.webp 768w, https:\/\/excire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/search-photos-lightroom-classic-13-13x12.webp 13w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 948px) 100vw, 948px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you tag a few faces manually, Lightroom will attempt to identify faces automatically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In theory, this is a great feature, since you can head into the People view and quickly find specific individuals in your archives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But whenever I\u2019ve tried Lightroom\u2019s facial recognition, I\u2019ve been <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disappointed. It\u2019s not good at grouping together similar faces, and the \u201ctrained\u201d name suggestions are often wildly off the mark.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, when I had Lightroom Classic scan a set of images of a person and a dog, the program struggled to differentiate between the two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So yes, Lightroom Classic does offer facial recognition and people tagging. The limitations are significant enough, however, that I don\u2019t use these features in my own image search and <a href=\"https:\/\/excire.com\/en\/how-to-organize-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organization workflows<\/a>\u2014and if you\u2019re a serious portrait, wedding, or event photographer who could benefit from powerful facial recognition capabilities, I\u2019d highly recommend investing in the Excire Search plugin (more on that below!).<\/span><\/p><h2>The Limitations of Lightroom\u2019s Search Tools<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightroom Classic gives you a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decent <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toolkit for searching your catalog. But all of these features have something in common:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They depend on the existing image data.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your images lack metadata, or if you haven\u2019t taken the time to tag each file with descriptive keywords, then Lightroom\u2019s built-in tools may be of limited assistance, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you\u2019re searching for specific files in hundreds of thousands of images.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you don\u2019t have to give up on Lightroom Classic. It analyzes your images using machine learning models, which allow you to search quickly and intuitively without relying on metadata.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I myself have been using the Excire Search plugin for almost two years now (I started with Excire Search 2022, then switched to Excire Search 2024 when it debuted early last year). The difference is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">astonishing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019ve stopped using Lightroom\u2019s native Text filter entirely when searching for photos, and while I do still work with the Metadata and Attribute filters, it\u2019s never to look for specific files, but instead to divide broader sets of images into smaller sections.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Excire Search <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a paid plugin. I\u2019ll also use it when I\u2019ve found one photo of a subject and I want to see other shots with the same content; that way, I can decide whether I\u2019ve done the subject justice, and which (if any) image is worth displaying.<\/span><\/p><h2>Find Your Photos Effectively in Lightroom Classic<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightroom Classic offers a few useful tools for searching your catalog. Finding photos <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possible with the Filter Bar, especially if you\u2019ve done lots of keywording in advance, and you can use the Sort Bar to order your images as needed.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if your catalog is large and\/or disorganized, the built-in LrC search tools come up short. Fortunately, Excire Search steps in where Lightroom leaves off.
